Frequently Asked Questions on Wheelie Bin Cleaning & Commercial Bin Cleaning

If you have a question that hasn’t been answered here – please let us know.

Why should I have my bin professionally cleaned?

When you clean your Wheelie Bin with a hose or bucket you will typically use about 75 to 115 litres of water. Water alone will not kill all germs and bacteria and if you do use a detergent the washed out contaminants are likely to be environmentally hazardous and only suitable for disposing of in a sewer and not in a storm drain.

A full clean of the insides of two bins (240ltr) by Scrubbish will typically take 25 seconds on the truck and use less than 0.1 litres in the 60 litres used in the cleaning process. This is achievable due to the fully enclosed automated bin cleaning system used.

Just to reassure you further all waste water is disposed of in the correct manner, we hold a trade effluence licence and are guided by Anglian Water in this matter.

Why don't you accept cash?
We get asked this a lot!

The trucks we use are really expensive to build and maintain, and we have to clean between 150 and 250 bins a day to make them pay. We can’t reach this target if we have to knock on doors to collect money, so this is why we only accept payment by Direct Debit.

Why do I have to make an appointment for a one off clean?
Most routes are nearly full so fitting one off cleans in can be tricky. If you are on a route that we are building up, we can only clean a few one off cleans in a single day, because these bins by their nature are usually much dirtier and contaminate our water very quickly.
How often should my wheelie bin be cleaned?
Most Scrubbish customers will have their domestic bins cleaned once every 4 weeks, whereas our commercial customers have their bins cleaned either weekly or fortnightly.
What happens if I forget to put my bin out, will I still be charged?
Don’t worry. You only get charged for the bins we clean, but saying that, if you miss two cleans and your bin needs scrubbing on the third, you will be charged for a one off clean for that size bin, then the following month it will go back to the agreed once every 4 weeks price.
